Winter Care - Lawns - 17/06/2009

With the colder months upon us, it's a perfect time to prepare your lawn for next summer. Lawn maintenance isn't difficult, it just requires a little time and effort.

Firstly, aerate your lawn, this is particularly important if you have a clay based soil. For a smaller lawns simply take a garden fork, drive it into the lawn and give it a wiggle. The holes it creates opens up the lawns root structure for oxygen, water and nutrients. If you have a larger lawn you may prefer to hire a machine, or gather a few friends.

As a general rule of thumb aerate your lawn twice a year to keep it healthy. Once in summer and once in winter.

If you have any bare areas you can either re-seed them or lay with turf as is appropriate, and be sure to use a good fertiliser to give them a great start.

If you are laying turf, to get the best results from your lawn we recommend using Hydrocell Water Saving Soil Improver mixed in to your current soil, or supplied as a soil mix. With the addition of Hydrocell you will find that the fertisilers you use will stay near the roots benefiting the lawn rather than being washed away. You'll use less fertilisers and less water to achieve great results.

I've been doing some turfing myself this last week, as we are terracing our yard and we used Hydrocell under the turf as we laid it.

We've had tradespeople, their tools, fence posts, workboots, dogs and all sorts walking all over the turf from the first day it was laid. A week later with all this mistreatment and it still looks fresh, green and vibrant - we were concerned about it dying off and are pleased to say that there is no issue with that at all. Now to build our retaining wall and the new back yard will be perfect for summer!

Take advantage of the cooler months to keep your lawn fresh for summer.
