With a little extra Money... - 06/05/2009

In the rainy weather that we have at the moment, it's still great to plan and dream.
This morning I asked some of the team what things they would they do in their backyard if they had some extra money; and got some great responses. Firstly I asked what if they had $1000.00, and then what if they had $5000.00.

I was curious to see what they could get for the money, partially because I'm doing landscaping at my own home at the moment and am always on the lookout for ideas. Here are the responses from Lesley.

For $1000.00:
I'd want to give my yard the 'quick tidy up'.

My garden beds need remulching, because weeds are coming through, and mulch is the best preventative for it. For my front yard garden beds I prefer to use Hoop Medium. The beds are on a slope and I have a lot of native trees, the Hoop blends nicely with the leaf litter when it falls. For my back yard I like to use Tea tree Mulch, the smell is great, and I have a dog that likes to run through the garden beds. I've found the Tea Tree simply doesn't move with feet running over it.

The other thing I would do is Top dress my Lawn. I've used Special Blend Top Dressing in the past with fantastic results, and it's so easy to use. I get a garden rake and spread the soil thinly across the lawn, so the grass still shows through; and it will feed the lawn and make a thicker healthier grass. I had in the past a large dirt patch that needed some turf, I used the special blend underneath the turf and the grass took root and simply shot up! Now, I can't even tell the difference between the old grass and the new.

For a little effort, fantastic results can be achieved. So what would she do if she had a little more money to spend?

For $5000.00:
I would dearly love an outdoor entertaining area outside my kitchen. Somewhere to enjoy the great queensland summers.

I have a concrete pathway around the outside of the house with a grassed area in the middle that currently isn't really usable. What I would do is make a paved section in the grassed area, and a pathway of pebbles continuing around to the water tank.

With the paved area I wouldn't pave the entire section, I would pave the part closest to the house with pavers close up to each other, and the further it goes from the house I would start spacing the pavers out with pebbles interspersed between them. In doing this I'd have my fully paved area for the table, and further away I would get a lovely outdoor lounge and have a place to relax, just a little bit away from the house.

My choice of pavers, The Quantum Stone Manly Colour, as it would match with my house, and Nambucca River Pebbles as a highlight.

Below is an image of what this project could end up looking like.

Thanks for sharing your ideas Lesley, Sounds Wonderful!
