|

The natural beauty of Decorative Pebbles, Rocks and Stones allows them to be used in so many applications in your landscape so you won't be disappointed if you decide to include them in your planning and designing. In fact, if there are large areas that you need to landscape and are working to a budget, then decorative pebbles are one of the most economical ways to go and are extremely low maintenance. When looking for the ‘stone’ you want, Centenary Landscaping now has the largest possible range of decorative pebbles and rocks for you to choose from with up to 40 different types. In fact, we now source decorative stones from as far afield as the ACT in the south and Lightening Ridge to the west … and this doesn’t include the imported bagged pebbles from different regions in Asia making us the largest supplier of these products in Brisbane.
Choosing the right one...
When trying to select a particular rock or stone for your project, looking at the photos on our website is a great start as these are photographs of the actual product in our storage bays. However, it’s still a great idea to come and see them in the “flesh” at the depot in Darra where they are all available in the bulk bays to view. This area has a concrete / bitumen floor so you can walk around in comfort and also know that the pebbles are stored in a clean environment. For those hot or rainy days, we also have samples of all the stones on display in the air-conditioned Sales Office so there’s no excuse not to visit!
So how much do I need?
Whether you need enough pebbles for a fish aquarium, a bonsai tree or to cover the whole back yard it can be done! You can purchase anywhere from one shovel to a full truckload …even two. At Darra, we have a dedicated yard team that are available to fill your trailer or shovel the stones into bags for you or the sales team can arrange a delivery at your convenience. If you are unsure how to work out the quantity needed, call us or drop in with some measurements of the area and we will be able to work it out for you. Sometimes it’s just handy to get a second opinion and that’s what we do to make sure you are not left short or have way too much left over. As a rough guide, if you are using the stones for a pathway we recommend that they are laid approx. 50mm deep which means that one cubic metre will cover 20 square metres (e.g. 10m x 2m).
Finishing Touches...
Okay, so you have the right quantity organised and your “friends” are coming around to help. What else is there to consider? Perhaps the most important is the use of a Weed mat underneath the stones. As well as preventing or minimizing the growth of unwanted weeds through the gravel, more importantly, the Weed mat acts as a barrier between the valuable stones and the soil underneath. What can happen without it is that the stones are slowly pressed into the soil and before too long the soil starts to work its way to the surface making the path unsightly…. And in the end will have to be re-laid, a cost that is unnecessary. It’s important to use a porous Weed mat material NOT simply black plastic as this won’t let water drain away and this can then start to smell or breed mosquitoes. Depending on the situation, creating a defining edge for your pebbled area will also finish it off well and if it's near a garden bed or a lawn it will also stop the soil or grass from contaminating the pathway itself. There are a wide range of ways you can edge your path or patio which you can see the in the “Garden Edging Section”. Again, if measurements and quantities are not your area of expertise, give us a call to discuss how much edging you will need.
