Hydrocell...Twice the Growth with up to Half the Water |
|
White flakes of Hydrocell spread over the soil before turfing to reduce watering time and keep lawn greenHydrocell is a unique soil improver with remarkable water holding properties. It looks like polystyrene flakes, but mixed into your soil or potting mix, Hydrocell holds up to 60% of its volume in water so it reduces your garden’s water consumption while encouraging faster, stronger and healthier plant growth.
It is suitable for all kinds of gardening applications including tree planting, garden beds, lawns, potted plants and rooftop gardens.
When You Use Hydrocell……
You’ll use less water.
As Hydrocell greatly improves the absorption and water-holding ability of the soil or potting mix, you’ll use up to 50% less water, resulting in more robust blooms along with denser foliage.
Hydrocell is easy to rewet.
When water comes into contact with Hydrocell, it is instantly absorbed and then retained within the root profile slowly releasing moisture and nutrients back to the plant as the soil becomes dry.
You’ll need less fertiliser.
When your fertiliser has become soluble it will be absorbed into the open cell structure of the foam with the available water. So while Hydrocell itself is not a fertiliser it makes any fertiliser applied last longer and be more effective.
Hydrocell actively reduces soil compaction.
It reduces compaction throughout the root zone simply by creating more air space, because Hydrocell holds 37% by volume air and 60% by volume water, the plants roots will actively seek out and grow through the Hydrocell flakes.
Hydrocell is biodegradable and environmentally safe.
It breaks down in the soil over a 7-10 year period into hydrogen and oxygen. It is also broken down by root tip acids, so when the plants actively source out the Hydrocell it will not impede root growth. Hydrocell is sterile and inert so it will not change the chemical balance of your soil mix. *E.g. the PH*
Over the last few years the trials and actual jobs completed with Hydrocell have been so successful and the product so effective, the Brisbane City Council and Greening Australia are now using Hydrocell in their street tree plantings. Landscape Architects are now specifying it in some of the major Landscaping Contracts in the South East, e.g. the renovations of King George Square and landscaping at the Chandler Sleeman Sports Complex.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I save water with Hydrocell?
As Hydrocell greatly improves the water-holding ability of the soil or potting mix, you'll use up to 50% less water, depending on conditions and plant species, and growth will be healthier.
Can I use Hydrocell with hard-to-wet soil?
Yes, Hydrocell is a perfect solution to hard-to-wet soils. When water comes into contact with Hydrocell, it is absorbed instantly and then slowly releases to the soil, reducing run-off loss.
Will I need less fertiliser?
Yes, nutrients are absorbed into the open cell structure of Hydrocell and are gradually released, rather than washing away, so 25% less fertiliser is needed.
Will my plants become waterlogged?
No, Hydrocell always retains air space within its foam structure, preventing waterlogging, and rotting of plant roots. This air space also reduces soil compaction in the root zone.
Is Hydrocell biodegradable and environmentally safe?
Yes, Hydrocell breaks down into carbon and nitrogen in the soil over a 10-year period. Because it is sterile and inert, Hydrocell will not change the chemical balance (e.g. the pH) of your soil. Hydrocell is also perfectly safe to use in your vegetable garden. Please read safety information on the bag before using Hydrocell.

"Our trial has proven that Hydrocell not only assists in providing moisture to plants, but it also appears to improve plant performance." Background: Greening Australia planted 1500 plants along Webster Rd on Brisbane's northside. One section was planted with water crystals (see image top left) and the other section with Hydrocel. (Sourced from the article ‘Greening Australia Greens Brisbane with help from Hydrocell’ Landscape Today, Spring/Summer 2005.) Vin Naidoo, Greening Australia - Brisbane. "I initially trialled Hydrocell instead of water crystals because water crystals don't really work. I added Hydrocell to my usual potting mix and found the plants were saleable four weeks earlier...and were twice as bushy, in flower, bigger and stronger with better colour." Rex Wilson, Kookaburra Nurseries "Hydrocell is lightweight so we could do a rooftop garden as a retrospective design option. Also, because Hydrocell retains moisture, it meant less irrigation. We are happy we used Hydrocell." Andrew Dalton Development Manager, Stockwell |
